  • MESSAGE:  April 9, 2008 "Dennis, Oh, thank you so much for this information! What a pleasant way to begin my day! We will check all the records next time we go home, but if you could supply us with a copy of the immigration record I would be so grateful. Please either e-mail or snail-mail it to me." Susan, I am glad to help. Attached please find a copy of the ship's manifest and a Korean War Casualty note. I got them both from the ancestry.com files. The photo shows , I believe, Mary Uher, seated center, holding my father. The photo was taken in Michalkovice just before they came to the USA in 1906 and Carlisle. Any resemblance to Frances Uher? • MESSAGE:  April 8, 2008 "Dennis, We are trying to find any information on the family of Augustine Hovanski (son of Jan Hovanski) who came to the US about the same time as your family 1907-1907. They also were coal miners in West Virginia. They originally settled in Carlisle, WV and later moved to Beckley, WV. All we knew was that they were from Michalkovice (Czech Republic), Austria. Do you know if Salt Lake has any records for this period? I guess we would also like to know if there are any records for this area of what is now the Czech Rebublic. Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated." Thank you. Susan Whitsett
p.s. Forget to mention that Jan Hovanski was married to Frances UHER Susan Whitsett

Hi, I host three WV genealogy websites, www.scarbrowv.com , www.eccleswv.com and www.chadra.com/genealogy.htm. You will find several years of correspondence relating to the miners and their descendants.
I visited the SS Peter & Paul Church office at the new church in Oak Hill, WV in 2003. They have the original records of baptisms, marriages and births from the Scarbro (Carlisle, WV) church which is no longer in use. Also, at the Fayetteville Courthouse you can look up the county records on your family and they will copy the pages for you for a small fee.
In Beckley, WV I found church records at St Francis De Sales Parish 614 S Oakwood Ave Beckley, WV 25801 Phone: (304) 253-3695 Fax: (304) 253-3694. Many miner families at Eccles, WV went there. I also found old records at the Beckley,WV courthouse.
There was the family of Johann Hovansky (wife Franciszka) from Michalkovice, Czech Republic that arrived through Philadelphia on Aug 15, 1905 and went to Carlisle, WV. I have an image of the ship's manifest I could email to you.
Your Frances Uher may very well by related to my great aunt Mary Uher who married my great uncle John Mlynek also from Michalkovice.
    Regards, Dennis Chadra artlover@chadra.com

  • MESSAGE:  February 3, 2008 "Dennis, Here's a footnote to history for you. In the Mylenek family here in the Detroit area we have:
    Andy Mylenek's children:
Raymond Mylenek and his son Ray Jr. trained as auto stylists and designers who have work for GM.
Raymond's brother Richard Mylenek is an accomplished artist who has exhibited at a number of shows in the Detroit area.
    Dorothy Mylenek - Romanowski's children:
son Walter. Wally is an auto designer, draftsman
    Edward Mylenek children:
son Jeffrey is an auto designer who is responsible for setting up GM auto show exhibits nationally.
    MaryAnn Mylenek Palmieri children
son Dominic Palmieri is an auto designer, systems engineer for American Axle.
daughter Andrea Palmieri is an accomplished jewelry designer and jewelry maker

I mentioned this to my wife MaryAnn and she suggested that I email you. I am a psychologist and have researched a bit on inherited traits, DNA. This interest in art and design to me is no mere coincidence. There is a connection here of some inherited traits and how people are wired to see the world! This is more than random, not provable, but certainly interesting...

Are there more people in your branch of the family in addition to yourself with an interest in art design? food for thought." Carmine Palmieri for wife Maryann Mylenek Palmieri

"Hi Dennis, Where did you get these documents? I would like to search for other info. James is my father. The cousins that my sister and I are getting together with are the daughters of Joseph and Andrew. I'm not sure Joseph's document is my uncle. Joseph was born after my dad, James. This shows Joseph older than my dad. I understand my uncle Joseph was one year younger. Andrew's document was cut off.
I would like to locate info on my mother's family. I've mentioned this before. Her father and brother's were coal miners and I understand they would have registered somewhere for this. This is info my sister tells me. My mother's twin, Adam, worked in the coal mines in West Virginia. Their parents originated from Poland and came from Pennsylvania. My mother met my father in Oak Hill, West Virginia after he returned from the war, (Eva Pawlowski / Pierce). Their name was legally changed when they came to Michigan. However they went by Pierce some of the time before changing it. Her brothers were Adam, Leopole / Leo, Edward, Chester,& James. Any help would be appreciated." Mary Ann Palmieri / Mylenek / Mlynek

  • MESSAGE:  January 17, 2008 "Hi Dennis. Thank you for sending the death certificates of my grandparents. I' sorry I haven't e-mailed you sooner. I don't have any pictures other than my immediate family. My sister has some older pictures. Maybe I can find some and e-mail you with pictures and info.
Back to the certificates. I am having problems downloading them. I can read them, but I can't print them to get the entire documents. I don't know if its my lack of computer skills or what... Could you resend them to me in PDF format?
I remember going to my grandmother's funeral when I was about 10/11 years old. My grandfather of course died before I was born. It looks like my aunt Nellie took care of the funeral arrangements from the death certificate.
We are having a reunion /lunch of the Mylenek cousins...the children of James, Joseph and Andrew Mylenek. I would like to show them the death certifictaes, if possible." Hope to hear from you, Mary Ann Palmieri (Mylenek)
