Correspondence 2006
"I recently read through my family tree and have become interested in my family roots and possible living relatives in the states and back in Poland. My Great-great grandfather was William John Adamczyk (shortened to Adams after immigrating to America).
One document calls him Walter, but he was never known by that. He was born in Warsaw, Poland August 12, 1879 and died August 24, 1964 in Jones, Michigan. His parents immigrated to America in 1898, when he was 9, and settled in Chicago.
He had 3 sisters , Anna, Victoria and Sadie. If you have any info on the family history before this or anyone who has heard of him or can place him in there family tree I would appreciate it." Thank you. Jeffrey Martin

"Hi Dennis, I also arrived in Passaic N.J. back in '70s and would you know , I lived at 154 9th street only four houses away from where Maria and Joseph Adamczyk lived around 1908. Not too many polish or slavic people remain in Passaic anymore. I'll shoot a photo of # 144 next time I'm driving by. For the last 20 yrs I live in Towaco, N.J. 30 miles west of NYC.
This is what I know presently, but can get lot of info from church record books next time I'm in Maniowy both on Slodyczka and Adamczyk families.
Joe Lapczynski dob 1956 (myself)
Ludwika ( Slodyczka ) Lapczynski (my mother) 1923
Maria Slodyczka (my grandmother) dob 1902/03? - 1924 she was only 21 (no doctor in the village)
Regina Slodyczka ( my great grandmother) dob 1887?- 1948/49?
MIKOLAJ SLODYCZKA (my great grandfather) dob ? - died in Pennsylvania mine accident 1932/33? ( was just about to return to Poland before the accident)
It is possible Mikolaj was Zofia's older brother or cousin. I'll do more research on that. keep in touch." Regards, Joe Lapczynski

Joe, Thanks for the information.
Here is more that I have:
Per my aunt, Sophie Adamczyk Chadra (July 2000), my mother's sister: Sisters Sophie and Anna were baptized (Aug 15, 1921 and Aug 15, 1923 respectively) at St. Joseph’s Church in Tiltonsville, Ohio. According to the church record book, Sophie’s Godparents were Michael Slodyczka and Mary Orkis and Anna’s Godparents were Nicholas Slodyczka and Catherine Kielbik.
My grandmother Sophia had two brothers: Michael Slodyczka and Nicholas Slodyczka who also lived in Glen Robbins, Ohio They both returned to Poland (as believed).
1910 – The U.S. Census showed that Joseph and Sophia (Slodyczka) Adamczyk lived at 45 Fifth Street, Passaic, NJ. He was age 24 and she was age 19. They had been married for 3 years and had no children. They both came from Austria / Poland. Joseph arrived in 1904. Joseph was a laborer in the Worsted Industry.
Joseph Sr. and Sophia were the parents of ten children:
**Mary Adamczyk b.1910 Passaic, NJ – d. June 18, 1914 [died as a child of Diphtheria (age 4) Per records at St. John of God Parish, Located at 1234 W. 52nd St. Chicago, Illinois in Sherman Park (Back of the Yards).
**John Adamczyk b. about September, 1912 Passaic, NJ- d. June 23, 1914 [died as a child of Diphtheria] (age 1 year – 9 months) Per records at St. John of God Parish, Located at 1234 W. 52nd St. Chicago, Illinois in Sherman Park (Back of the Yards).

Joseph John “Joey” Adamczyk b. Jul 1, 1925 Glen Robbins, OH - - d. Nov10, 1981
?Agnes Adamczyk b.1927? Chicago, IL - d.? (died as a newborn)
**Joe, I would like to get copies of the birth records of Mary and John Adamczyk born in Passaic c.1910 & 1912 . Also a copy of the marriage in Passaic of Joseph and Sophia (Slodyczka) Adamczyk on c.1907.
About 1913 – The family moved to Chicago, Illinois.
1919 - The Joseph Adamczyk family moved to Glen Robbins, Ohio Near County Road 1 & County Road 2 in Jefferson County. Joseph worked as a coalminer for the Dorothy coal mine owned by the Youghiogheny Company. The Adamczyks lived in the 5th house from the company pool hall and recreation center, located near the bridge and across the RR tracks from the Dorothy Company general store. The house still exists in July 2000 at 261 County Road 2, Rayland, Ohio 43943. Rayland Post Office took over the area.
Jan 15, 1920 - The US Census lists Joseph, Sophia, Rose, Marie and Josephine as living in Warren Township, Jefferson County, Ohio (Glen Robbins). They were renting a house from the company. The Census also shows the three girls as having been born in Ohio (actually, Chicago, IL). They were listed as Aliens having arrived in the US in 1910-1911. Joseph’s occupation was listed as “coalminer”.

Hello Joe, Thanks for your email. Where are you located? I would like to have contact with my grandmother's relatives but I don't write nor speak polish. Can you help me? If your mom is a Slodyczka we may be related.

Sophia (Zofia) Slodyczka (Blonde hair and Blue eyes) was born in Poland in April 1892 and died Apr 8, 1946 in Chicago, IL USA. She was the daughter of Michael Slodyczka b.? Poland -d. ? and Mary ? b. ? - d. ?.

April 19, 1902 – Marya Adamczyk, arrived in New York, City, NY on the Ship Cassel which departed from Bremen, Germany on April 5, 1902. She listed her age as 30, Female, Married coming from Maniowy, Poland to live with her husband, ? Adamczyk on Donay Street, Passaic, NJ.

"Hello, I just came upon your site and thought I would let you know that my husband, Hans-Juergen Adamczyk was born in Altenhunden, Germany, in 1942. His birth father was Joseph Adamczyk. However, his mother, Maria Eierdanz divorced him and remarried. Her new husband adopted him (last name David) and he has had no contact with the Adamczyk family.
It would be interesting to find them, especially since we have a 17 years old son, who would be Joseph Adamczyk's grandson. We would appreciate any information. Your site is wonderful." Thank you. Tanya David

Hello Tanya, I will post your request today. Does he have his original birth certificate which should show his parents name and residence information? Does he know where he was born? Has he checked church records? Do you have any Adamczyk photos, stories or documents to share on the web site? Are you now in the US?
The Church of the Latter Day Saints has a world wide family history site http://www.familysearch.org/ which may be of help." Dennis Chadra artlover@chadra.com

"Hi: My grandparents came from Golcowa, Poland (not sure of the correct spelling). My grandmother's name was Agatha Roichfut or Rachfut. She was born on January 12, 1888. She married Joseph Adamczyk and came to Newark, New Jersey. They had three sons, John, Walter and Stanley. Joseph had a brother that was called "Striku". I'm not sure of the spelling but he also resided in New Jersey. He was unmarried." Barbara Grecky

Barbara, Golcowa, Poland is located almost due east of Krakow. My Adamczyk family came from Nowy Targ which is south of Krakow. Thanks for your input. Do you have any photos to share?

"Thank you Dennis, I hope that this will help her search. The only information regarding his adoption that I can tell you is that the parents that gave him up for adoption were Carolo Colossin and Maria Adomczyk (was spelled "Adomich" on baptism certificate), he was born in Perth Anboy, New Jersey, Feb. 10th 1908, and the adopting parents were Santo Mesi and Margaret Mesi, of Bridgeton(?). The copy of the adoption certificate that she has is barely legible, but I believe it states that the adoption date was Sept. 15, 1910.
So that's what I have so far...thanks again to you and whoever reads this and knows information." Elena DeYoung
"Hello, I am a care provider for a lady looking for information on her father, who was adopted. Adamczyk was his given name, later when adopted it was Colican. The lady that I am doing research for wants to know this information for medical reasons; she had a rare disease (P.S.P. progressive supernuclear palsy) and wants to see if it is hereditary. any information would be greatly appreciated." Sincerely, Elena DeYoung

"Dennis - My Grandfather's family was from New Jersey after all. Even though in my last email I found out he (John Adamczyk) was born in MA, the rest of his siblings were born in NJ. Since you seem to be the expert on Adamczyk's (or at least know more than anyone else I know), I am sending you a picture for your archives. Perhaps you will see a family resemblance.
The picture is of my Great-grandfather, Michael Adamczyk. The back of the picture is labeled Michael Adamczyk and Doris - 126 Shaw St. My mother, Doris, was born in January 1943 so this picture is probably from around 1945 or 1946. At least that is my guess. I remember hearing about the house on Shaw Street and it is in NJ, around the Garfield/Passaic area." Cheers! Norma Jene

Norma Jene, thanks for the great picture. I see a resemblance in the eyes. Have you found out where the family came from in Poland? My Adamczyk side originally came from Nowy Targ / Maniowy, Galacia, Poland.

"Dennis - Thanks for the update! What a strange coincidence...I just received my grandfather's birth certificate in the mail. It took awhile to track down as I kept looking in NJ.
My Grandfather, John Adamczyk, was born in Taunton, County of Bristol, MA. He was born on Dec. 30, 1920. It lists his father, Michael Adamczyk, as 34 years old. His mother, Franceska Wdowiak, 28 years old. Both of his parents are listed as being from Austria-Poland.
So it looks like if we are related, it is very distant link. But perhaps someone reading your site has additional information." Thanks again, Norma Jene

PS nice paintings!
"Dennis - My mother was an Adamczyk who was born in Passaic, NJ. As far as I know her whole family lived in or around Passaic. I was even born in Passaic.
My mom died a few years ago. Her name was Doris and she had a brother named Michael and a sister named Patricia. Her parents were John Adamczyk (son of Michael Adamczyk & Frances Wdowiak) and Weronika (Sudul) Adamczyk (daughter of John Sudul & Zuzanna Kopec).
My grandparents were born ~1920 and were the first born in the US. All of their parents came from Poland. I'm not sure if there is a connection or not. But the names Adamczyk, Michael, and Passaic are a strange coincidence.
Hopefully there is a connection as I have a bunch of pictures of people from Poland that I have not yet been able to identify." Sincerely, Norma normajene@hotmail.com
